My Birthday Getaway

To celebrate my 28th birthday, Trevor and I took a little 4-day trip away up the central coast to Morro Bay/San Luis Obispo.

We were both seeking some much needed time outdoors, so we planned to fill our days with hiking, mountain bike riding, and off-roading in our new Tacoma.

WHAT WE GOT UP TO

day one - saturday

We spent most of our time driving up the coast (4-5 hours), heading to the cutest a-frame home which I instantly fell in love with when I was searching for Airbnb’s. I absolutely adore a-frame homes and to top it off it was fully remodeled with an incredible kitchen (photos below). Once we settled in, we went for an afternoon hike in San Luis Obispo aka SLO. Trevor then found an amazing little vegan joint called Ziggy’s. We ate their literally 3 nights in a row, it was thaaaat good! The guys there even gave me some complimentary cookies and a T-shirt on my birthday - what legends!

day two - sunday

We found an amazing waterfall off a trail called Big Falls Trailhead, where we hiked around for an hour or two. Getting to the falls was an adventure in itself. The road up Lopez Canyon crosses the creek more than a dozen times before dead-ending at the Big Falls Trailhead. This was probably the best hike we’ve done and if you’re ever in the area, I highly recommend you venture out to it (make sure you’re in a 4WD). The trail was shaded and it felt like we were in a rainforest. We also crossed several river beds that we had to walk through. Luckily it was warm out so our shoes could dry quickly. On the way back I got to drive the truck through the creeks. I never thought I’d have so much fun driving through the water haha! After that, we spent the afternoon riding our mountain bikes at Montaña de Oro State Park with Trevor’s friends, Taylor and Eric. They showed us around some of their local trails and we finished our ride with a little shoot by the water, followed by another night of Ziggy’s.

day three - monday

Although it felt like the day before was my birthday (technically it was in Australia) we decided to do something a little special by driving 30 minutes north to explore Paso Robles (it’s kinda like Napa Valley). We drove around for a while and passed a lot of beautiful wineries. Sadly they were all closed, but we discovered that Epoch Estate Wines had curbside pickup so we purchased two bottles online and went to pick them up. It was such a beautiful estate (one of our clients did the construction on it - @czphx) that was set on the most awe-inspiring landscape, so we will definitely be back when things go back to “normal”. That night, we grabbed takeaway from Ziggy’s and drove to Morro Bay to watch the sunset and have a picnic in the back of our truck with Italia. It was perfect.

day four - tuesday

We hit the trails at Morro Bay State Park in the morning, before packing our bags and heading back down to Newport Coast. The trip ended up being one of our best yet. I think what made it so great was how active we were, how healthy we ate, and the places we went. We definitely will be heading up the coast again soon!
